This corneal iontophoresis applicator is an electrode that enables the rapid passage of Riboflavin and other pharmaceuticals through the epithelium into the corneal stroma when coupled with the creation of a low-intensity electric field.
The soaking of the cornea with riboflavin, in association with ophthalmic UV-A radiation, is indicated for the treatment of infectious keratitis and corneal melting. The transepithelial penetration of Riboflavin, favored by the electrical field of low intensity, greatly improves the corneal cross-linking procedure by shortening the Riboflavin soaking time and by avoiding the need for de-epithelialization, thus shortening the procedural time and helping to reduce patient discomfort during postoperative healing.
